Fire destroys Westport house

A Tuesday afternoon fire destroyed a large house at 20 Meadowbrook Lane in Westport.

Fire Chief Brian Legendre said all of the occupants  — members of the Ana and Robert Habib family — made it out safely.

The house was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters first arrived and firefighters said that they had no chance to save it, especially without hydrants in the area.

Water tanker trucks from many surrounding towns — Fall River, Dartmouth, Little Compton, Tiverton, Portsmouth and more — lugged water to the fire scene, much of it coming from a staging point on Route 177 in Tiverton.

The cause of the blaze is not yet certain.

Meadowbrook Lane is part of a newer neighborhood of homes on large lots that winds through an area south of Charlotte White Road in the central part of town.

More details to follow.
