Town Wharf workers noticed smoke coming from roof, pulled alarm

Posted

Trafford's restaurant on Water Street is closed temporarily after a roof fire early Thursday afternoon.

Warren Fire Chief James Sousa said workers doing repairs at the Warren Town Wharf noticed a large amount of smoke coming from the restaurant's roof line just around 1:15. They and several volunteer fire fighters who happened to be passing by at the time went into the restaurant, advised the half or dozen or so occupants that there was a fire, and pulled the alarm. Everyone got out safely, the chief said.

Fire crews arrived with a ladder truck and several engines and had the fire under control in about 20 minutes, the chief said. Since it occurred around vent flashing on the roof line, "it was not held back by the sprinkler system," he said. "It burned through the roof a little bit around the vents."

The chief said it was fortunate that people nearby noticed the smoke, as when fires occur in roof areas you often "have no idea," he said.

Management at Trafford posted an update Thursday on Facebook, thanking the Warren Fire Department's volunteers for their quick efforts. The restaurant is closed while repairs are made.
