Ferdinand Mendes, 60, Warren

Ferdinand Mendes, 60, of Warren, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at home. He was the beloved husband of Diane (Lapane) Mendes. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Ferdinand and Lillian (Palumbo)Mendes, Fred was a tool maker for ES Products in Bristol, and was a volunteer for Warren Fire Department, Engine 3. He was a HAM radio operator. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and loved his South Cornell "kids." He was the brother of Linda Gray of Chicago, and uncle of Melissa Mendes of Warren, Taylor Lapane of Miami, Jennifer and Dawn Gray of Chicago, and the late Vernon Gray. Arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, Warren, where the family received friends from Saturday, Nov. 24. A memorial service followed in the funeral home. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
