Eric Bloom to perform at Mt. Hope jazz night

The annual Mt. Hope High School Jazz Night will be held on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.  The concert will feature the Kickemuit Jazz Band under the direction of Jeffrey Brackett, JIVE under the direction of Vicki Boyle, Mt. Hope Jazz Combo led by Lyn Kotuby, and the Jazz Ensemble led by Robert Arsenault.

The guest artist for the evening will be jazz trumpeter Eric Bloom from the class of 1999.

Eric Bloom is a trumpet player who has been playing professionally since he was 15. A native of Rhode Island, Mr. Bloom has become one of the most in-demand trumpet players of the New England area.

At 17 years old he was chosen as the soloist for the All Eastern jazz band that performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Jon Faddis. He attended William Paterson University and the New England Conservatory of Music.

In 2009 he began playing with Diane Birch, a highly acclaimed singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, N.Y., opening up for British pop sensation James Morrison, singer Mat Kearny, and Nick Jonas.

Mr. Bloom has appeared on television shows including the Craig Ferguson Show, the Carson Daly Show, Jimmy Kimmel Show, the Today Show, the David Letterman Show, and the Conan O’Brian Show.

In 2011, Eric started playing with Soulive and Lettuce, two of the most critically-acclaimed American funk bands. Since then, he had the chance to play with musical greats such as Dr. John, Pharohe Monch, Billy Martin, Meshell Ndegeocello, Skerik, Kofi & Oteil Burbridge, Talib Kweli, Questlove, Mark Whitfield, Karl Denson, Ledesi, Dave Matthews Band, George Porter Jr., Eldar, and Maceo Parker.

The concert is open to the public.  Admission is $5.00 for adults.  Students and senior citizens are free.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
