Elizabeth D. Bruining, Little Compton


Elizabeth DeLeeuw Bruining of South Shore Road, Little Compton, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, after a long illness. She was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Lodi, New Jersey, the seventh and youngest child of Peter and Wilhelmina (Sharpe) DeLeeuw. She was predeceased by her parents, her six brothers and sisters and her husband of 59 years, Nicholas Meyer Bruining. She and her husband were longtime residents of Maywood, NJ, before retiring to Little Compton in 1974.

Mrs. Bruining is survived by four children, Henry E . (Hank) and wife Marilyn of South Boston, Va., Elizabeth Anne Arruda and husband Bruce of Dartmouth, Mass., Wilma Claire Bruining and husband Scott Chase of Little Compton, and Anne MiOk Bruining of Providence.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Matthew Bruining and wife Amy of Huntersville, NC, Melissa Teeter and husband Michael of Denver, NC, Megan Becker and husband Michael of Brattleboro, Vt., Nicholas Bruining and wife Kate of Huntersville, NC, Samuel Bruining and fiancé Carey Wolford of Clover, SC, Elizabeth Arruda of Astoria, NY, and Benjamin Arruda of Presque Isle, Maine. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren.

Mrs. Bruining was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Newport and former member of Lodi Christian Reformed Church, and had volunteered at Christian Healthcare Center in Wycoff, NJ. She had also been active in Little Compton's Meals on Wheels program and was a member of the "Tuesday Girls." She was also blessed with many longtime friends who visited often during her long illness.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Care of Newport and Bristol County, 1184 Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

A graveside service will be held Monday, Oct. 28,  at 11 a.m., at Pleasant View Cemetery, Tiverton. Funeral arrangements are by Fern Acres Funeral Home, Little Compton.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
