Eastern Rhode Island 4-H Fair this weekend in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — The Eastern Rhode Island 4-H Country Fair returns to Glen Park this weekend, July 15 and 16, with two days of livestock animals, demonstrations, kids’ games and contests and more fun.

The 48th fair started behind the Portsmouth fire station in 1970 and has grown every year. All the organizers ask from attendees is a $2 donation upon entering.

This year the fair has added a car show, raffles and is selling its own T-shirts. Both days there will be 4-H exhibits, children’s games, water slides, face-painting, a dunk tank, a bouncy house, animal shows, vendors, crafters and more.

Here is the complete schedule:

Saturday

8:30 a.m.: Deadline to check in exhibits

9 a.m. Fair opens, breed judging of poultry and rabbits

10 a.m.: Bike parade, Newport Martial Arts, dairy show (Tent 2)

11 a.m. 4-H rabbit and poultry showmanship, egg on a spoon contest

Noon: East Bay Martial Arts, ice cream-eating contest, pet talent show (Tent 2)

1 p.m.: Corn-husking contest, Dance Expressions (Tent 1), antique tractor show

1:30 p.m.: Children’s pedal tractor pull

2 p.m.: Villari’s Martial Arts, 4-H sheep show (Tent 2), doughnut on a string contest, 4-H sheep show (Tent 2)

3 p.m.: Egg toss (horse ring)

4 p.m.: Pie-eating contest

5 p.m.: Fair closes

5:30 p.m.: Cow chip bingo winner ($1,000), 10th annual chicken dinner

Sunday

8:30 a.m.: Horse show begins

9 a.m.: Fair opens

10 a.m.: 4-H open beef show (Tent 2), egg on a spoon contest, garden tractor pulls

11 a.m.: POW Science (Tent 1)

Noon: Watermelon-eating contest, open dairy goat show (Tent 2), POW Science (Tent 1)

12:30 p.m.: Children’s pedal tractor pull

1 p.m.: Ice cream-eating contest, swine demonstration, antique tractor show

1:30 p.m.: Pre-registration for cow pie-throwing contest (event booth)

2 p.m. Cow pie-throwing contest, doughnut on a string contest

2:30 p.m.: Piñata

3 p.m.: Egg toss (horse ring)

3:30 p.m.: 50/50 raffle drawing

4 p.m.: Pie-eating contest

4:30 p.m.: Raffle drawing begins

5 p.m.: Fair closes

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
