East Providence's Bay View grad Culpo is crowned Miss Universe

LAS VEGAS — St. Mary Academy-Bay View alumna Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Universe Wednesday, Dec. 19, being chosen over dozens of other contestants during the pageant held at Planet Hollywood.

Miss Culpo, of Cranston and currently a sophomore music student at Boston University, takes over the throne from Leila Lopes of Angola. Miss Lopes presented the tiara to her successor.

According to the pageant website, the new Miss Universe 2012 will spend the next year traveling the world championing for her cause alliances, namely HIV/AIDS prevention.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986.
