East Providence unveils new floating dock at Sabin Point Park
EAST PROVIDENCE — Sabin Point Park in Riverside, a well-recognized 4.6 acre city park located at the end of Shore Road with great waterfront views and a range of activities such as a playground and fishing pier, has had a much used amenity returned to it with the installation of a new 16x20-foot floating dock.
The previous floating dock was removed due to deterioration after being in use for eighteen years. The city received a grant from RIDEM and the R.I and U.S. Fish & Wildlife to purchase all materials required, including the personnel hours needed to build the new dock.
Tony Viera, City Carpenter, and Ron Nawrocki, of the Parks Division, constructed the dock on-site over a number of days. On Monday, July 7, the dock was lifted by a professional crane service working with Riverside resident Christopher Grant and maneuvered into place between the four existing piers. The dock was available for use later that day. The dock is just south of the existing boat ramp, so it is a convenience for boaters wanting to use Sabin Point Park for putting in or taking out boats.
In addition to those employees and residents who assisted with the build, Planning Director Jeanne Boyle acknowledged "all the support and work done by the entire City Council, and especially Ward 3 Councilman Tom Rose," in whose district Sabin Point is located.
Many people were on hand at the park on July 7 to watch the installation activities. Some reminisced about swimming and playing at the park as a child, including a woman visiting from Indiana who just happened to stop by the park that day as part of her visit to East Providence.
Sabin Point Park is included in the State of Rhode Island Tourism Guide, which identifies it as a “jewel of the bay," as well as in the Daytripper’s Guide, which notes amazing waterfront views and a range of available activities, including use of the fishing pier and boat ramp. Now the floating dock has been returned to Sabin Point park as yet another amenity.
