East Providence School Committee sets public hearing on possible Oldham School closing
EAST PROVIDENCE — In a press release issued Thursday, Jan. 17, the East Providence School Committee announced it has scheduled a public hearing on the fate of Oldham Elementary School.
The hearing is set to be held at the Riverside Middle School Auditorium, 179 Forbes Street, on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
The purpose of the public hearing is to "hear rationale for and reaction to a proposal to close the Oldham Elementary School," located at 640 Bullocks Point Avenue. All interested parties are invited to attend and offer comments regarding this proposal.
Interim School Superintendent Dr. John DeGoes and a study committee, at the behest of the East Providence Budget Commission and the State Department of Education, recently issued a cost-saving proposal at the Jan. 10 School Committee meeting which would close Oldham and redirect its some 170 students to nearby Waddington. In addition, all incoming Kindergarten students from Riverside, including those originally targeted to attend Waddington, would be sent to Meadowcrest. The superintendent noted Waddington could handle the influx of new students, claiming it has the capability of housing up to 600 pupils.
