East Providence Police nab female suspect in Columbus heist

Posted

EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Police Department detectives Wednesday arrested a suspect in the Columbus Credit Union robbery, one of two heists to occur in the city on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Jennefer Gomes, 27, of 137 Oak Crest Drive, Riverside, is believed to be the female suspect who entered the Columbus Credit Union at just after noon on Tuesday and claimed to have some sort of explosive device. She left the building with an unspecified amount of cash and was believed to have been driven away from the scene by a male suspect toward Barrington in a red Ford F150 pickup truck.

Police believe Ms. Gomes committed the crime with her three-year-old child in the vehicle. No other suspects have been arrested or charged as of mid-afternoon Wednesday.

Later Tuesday, as East Providence detectives gathered evidence at the Columbus site in Riverside, the now-infamous "Bearded Bandit" struck the Pawtucket Credit Union a few miles north in the Rumford section of the city. Police have yet to release any more information on that investigation.
