East Providence native Rego plans to relinquish chair of State Elections Board
EAST PROVIDENCE — City native Frank J. Rego recently announced his intention to relinquish the chairmanship of the Rhode Island State Board of Elections.
Mr. Rego, a lifetime Rumford resident, confirmed his decision during a phone conversation. According to the agenda posted on the Secretary of State website, the board is expected to take up Mr. Rego's resignation from the chair at its next scheduled meeting on Thursday, Jan. 16, in Providence.
A member of the board since appointed by then Gov. Donald Carcieri in the summer of 2003, Mr. Rego first served as acting chairman in 2011 before being elected by his peers to take over the position on a full-fledged basis in July of 2012.
According to its website, “The mission of the Board of Elections is to protect the integrity of the electoral process and to effectively and efficiently administer the provisions of the election laws of the United States and the State of Rhode Island including, but not limited to, the governance and conduct of elections, voter registration, campaign finance, public funding of campaigns and any other duties prescribed by law.”
Mr. Rego, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Roger Williams Beverage, an independent wine distributor headquartered in East Providence, said his professional and personal commitments needed to take precedent over his appointed duties.
"The peak time for my business is September to December, which is the same time as the election cycle," Mr. Rego explained. "It's important the chairman have the time and focus during that time, which has become increasingly hard for me to do."
Mr. Rego also said it made sense for him to relinquish his duties now in anticipation not only of the 2014 campaign season but also because of his impending departure from the board. His term on Elections ends in June of 2015. Board of Elections members are limited to two six-year terms.
