East Providence High sports complete first week of winter season
The EPHS skaters got the regular season underway last weekend with a split of their first two D-III league outings.
The Townies dropped a 7-1 decision to host West Warwick/Exeter-West Greenwich Friday night, Dec. 7, at the West Warwick Civic Center. E.P. trailed 3-0 going into the third period then were hit by a four-goal barrage as the Wizards cruised to the win. Ryan Costa, from Brynne Costa, accounted for the lone E.P. tally.
The following evening, Dec. 8, the Townies defeated host Cranston East, 3-1, in a contest played at the Cranston Memorial Rink. Ryan Costa started the scoring for the locals with a goal in the first period. Brynne Costa, a freshman, later netted her first career high school goal in the third period, which proved to be the game-winning tally. Troy Derrick added an insurance goal later in the final period. Kyle Marquis had two assists. Kevin Hall, Jared Estrella and Ryan Costa also had helpers. Sophomore goalie Marc LaValley made 13 saves to earn the win between the pipes.
The Townies play Narragansett in Smithfield Friday night, Dec. 14, at 7 o’clock. E.P. plays its first game locally at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, a rematch with West Warwick/EWG, Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m.
The EPHS girls' basketball team, likewise, split its initial forays on the floor this winter, losing to Portsmouth, 45-43, and beating Lincoln, 47-44, in non-league outings. The Townies couldn't hold a nine-point second half lead in their loss to the Patriots. Taylor Wiggins paced E.P. with 13 points. Angela Leonardo chipped in eight. Thomeeka Speaks added seven off the bench and Brittany Crosby five. The Townies turned the tables in their win over the Lions, overcoming a four-point deficit in the closing minutes of the contest. Speaks, a senior, netted a team and career-best 16 points. Wiggins went for 12 and grabbed seven rebounds. Crosby added six.
E.P. plays the third of four non-league games to open its schedule Thursday night, Dec. 13, at home for Burrillville at 7 o'clock.
The EPHS boys' cagers began their Division I regular season scheduled with a 66-41 loss on the road to North Kingstown, Dec. 11. The host Skippers raced to a 41-23 lead at intermission and never looked back. John Vaughan led the Townies with 14 points. Jashaun Bennett chipped in eight and Charlie Brown seven.
E.P. is home for Hendricken Friday, Dec. 14, and plays in Coventry, Dec. 18. Both games tip at 7 p.m.
