East Providence High spikes rival LaSalle in girls' volleyball opener

PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School girls' volleyball team began its 2013 Division I regular season schedule with a 3-1 road victory over rival LaSalle Thursday evening, Sept. 5.

The Townies defeated the Rams by the scores of 25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21. Logan Fontes paced the locals with 5 kills and 2 blocks. Setter Cassia Spivey had 13 assists, 4 service aces and was solid in the back row as was libero Casey Traverse, who had 15 digs.

"We played uneven volleyball for the entire match but fought our way to a win. It's early in the season and the play on the court showed it," said EPHS head coach Alex Butler. "We played up and down for the entire match. There were stretches of solid play and stretches of careless serving and passing errors. This team is young and inexperienced and will have to work hard to find consistent play."
