East Providence Fourth of July fireworks display features music of ‘Crushed Velvet’

EAST PROVIDENCE — The City of East Providence and the Department of Recreation invite all to celebrate Independence Day with an evening of music and fireworks. The event is free and open to the public and made possible by “Platinum” Sponsor United Water and “Silver” Sponsors, MEGA/MTG Disposal LLC and J.H. Lynch & Sons Inc.

The festivities will take place on Friday, July 5, (rain date July 6), at Pierce Memorial Stadium, 201 Mercer St. Gates open at 6 p.m.The evening will feature a concert of classic rock by “Crushed Velvet”, followed by fireworks. Food and beverage concessions available. No pets or coolers in the stadium please.

“Crushed Velvet” is a Bristol-based group made up of  Joe Scolaro, Rick Pimental, Buzzy Ketz, Stephen Howe. They’re noted for playing high energy, mind bending, 1970’s hard rock, basically all the music your parents told you not to listen to! ...Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Foghat, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Queen.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
