EAST PROVIDENCE — A city man was struck and killed by a motor vehicle while riding his bicycle on Willett Avenue in Riverside on Monday evening, Aug. 14.

East Providence Police announced Tuesday morning, Aug. 15, the victim, a male in his 20s, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Rhode Island Hospital.

The accident, involving an SUV, occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. at the intersection of Willett and Arrowhead Avenues.

(Updated, Aug. 15, 7 p.m.) Later Tuesday afternoon, East Providence Police identified the bicyclist killed in the accident as Riverside resident Ethan Simpson, 21. Simpson resided on Forbes Street with his parents.

According to his parents, he was an avid bike rider who tragically lost his life doing what he loved. Simpson was a dean’s list student at Rhode Island College and was adored by his family and will be greatly missed by them.

Also announced in the press release, the initial investigation by the East Providence Police Traffic and Detective Division has determined the vehicle, an older model SUV, was traveling south on Willett Avenue, approaching Arrowhead Avenue.

The bicyclist was traveling north on Willett Avenue, approaching Arrowhead Avenue. The vehicle turned left on to Arrowhead Avenue and the bicyclist and vehicle came into collision. It does not appear speed or alcohol was a factor in the accident at this time. No charges have been filed against the operator of the vehicle at his time and the investigation continues.
