East Providence ‘Back to School Fair’ needs donations

EAST PROVIDENCE — The “Back to School Fair” for the students and teachers of Kent Heights and Emma G. Whiteknact Elementary Schools will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Kent Heights from 9 a.m. to noon. The goal is to provide new backpacks, lunch boxes and school supplies to the students as well as essential classroom supplies for all of their teachers.

During the fair, the students, along with their families and teachers, will enjoy a pancake breakfast, collect their school supplies, learn how to make healthy snacks courtesy of Johnson and Wales students, and receive “Back to School” haircuts free of charge.

Among the School Supplies needed are: 1" Binder (clear sleeve on front); 2-Pocket Folder (plain - red, blue, purple, green or yellow); Single Subject Notebook (spiral, wide-ruled); 3-Subject Notebook (spiral, wide-ruled); Composition Notebook (black or red); Filler Paper (wide-ruled); #2 Pencils; Mechanical Pencils; Large Pink Eraser; Pencil Cap Erasers; Pencil Box (plastic); Pencil Sharpener (hand-held); Pens (red or blue); Highlighter; Dry Erase Markers; Colored Markers (thick, washable, 8 count); Colored Markers (thin, washable, 8 count); Colored Pencils (12 count); Crayons (24 count); Flash Drive; Glue Stick; Index Cards; Scissors (kid - rounded tip); Ruler; Small Thesaurus or Thesaurus/Dictionary; Ziploc Freezer Bags - Gallon; Ziploc Freezer Bags - Quart; Disinfectant Wipes; Hand Sanitizer; Kleenex; Paper Towels (rolls); Lunch boxes.

Job Lot offers teachers discounted supplies

Ocean State Job Lot announces its “Educator Partnership” savings program for teachers and educators throughout the Northeast. From Aug. 8-21, teachers, educators, homeschoolers, school management, and support personnel who are authorized to make purchases on behalf of their school will receive a 30 percent discount on eligible school supplies.

The program is available at all Job Lot stores throughout the region, including those in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Proof of employment such as a pay stub and ID is required upon checkout. Eligible products include a wide variety of brand name stationery products and art supplies ranging from writing instruments, paints and crayons to poster board, staplers and paper – a total of 924 products in 75 different categories.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
