Eagles Notebook: Barrington High School girls' hockey co-op grows
The Barrington High girls’ hockey co-operative grew by another school when the Rhode Island Principals Committee on Athletics and the Interscholastic League Ice Hockey committee recently approved the addition of players from Portsmouth to join those from Mt. Hope who already are part of the Eagles’ program.
The three-team co-op was given the go-ahead for one winter, starting in a couple of weeks with the beginning of the 2011-12 season. Players from Mt. Hope have been playing on the Barrington team since ‘09-10.
“Portsmouth reached out to us. There were a few students interested in playing hockey. They knew we were already co-oping with Mt. Hope. We looked into it, submitted our Letter of Proposal and it was approved,” said Barrington athletic director George Finn. “The benefit to those students is giving them a chance to participate in high school hockey. For us the benefit is we’re helping them out.”
With numbers at a low point a couple of years ago, Barrington and Mt. Hope got together out of necessity really. The amount of players coming into the Barrington program, however, have been on the up-tick the last two seasons.
“Our numbers are starting to come back,” said Finn. “At some point hopefully we’ll have enough to have our own team again and hopefully this sparks interest at those two schools so that they can have their own teams in the future. That would be great for the sport.”
Girls’ teams can take to the ice for the first time on Nov. 14. By the way, boys’ hockey practice can begin on Nov. 17. All other sports start winter preseason practice on Nov. 28.
Barrington High will be honored by Rhode Island Special Olympics at its annual banquet Thursday night, Oct. 20, in West Warwick at the West Valley Inn.
Barrington is being recognized for its committment to the Unified Sports program, which brings special needs students together with their peers in athletic competition. Currently, Unified volleyball takes place each fall and Unified basketball is held in the spring.
“We along with a handfull of other schools helped initiate the program, but we were one of the first. We’re very proud to be a part of the Unified sports program,” said Finn.
Hoops tourney returns
Barrington High will be the setting once again for a hoops tournament after Christmas. The Barrington Boosters Club-sponsored Holiday Basketball Tournament takes place Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 28 and 29, in town.
The BHS boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have hosted a holiday event since 2008. The Boosters Club came on board as sponsor the following winter.
Both Mt. Hope teams have traditionally taken part in the event, and that remains the case for the boys. The Huskies join the Eagles, North Kingston and Holy Name, of Worcester, Mass..
