The Barrington High School football team scored three touchdowns in the first half against Woonsocket on Friday night, but the Villa Novans scored twice late in the fourth quarter and beat Barrington, 27-21 in overtime.
The Eagles, who opened the season with a 40-0 non-league loss at Middletown, trailed early against Woonsocket, 7-0, but built a furious comeback in the second quarter. The Eagles gashed the Villa Novans' defense with hard runs from Nicholas Roach and Dante Augustine. Barrington quarterback Liam McManus fired strikes downfield to open receivers — William Kuhn and Matt Block made key receptions.
With three minutes left to play in the first half, Barrington found itself with a 21-7 advantage and possession of the football at midfield. The Eagles tried a few times to run the ball against Woonsocket, but the Villa Novans' defense stiffened.
Barrington struggled to gain any offensive momentum in the second half, while Woonsocket's defense crowded the line of scrimmage and punished the Eagles' ball carriers.
The Villa Novans cut the lead to 21-13, and then, with time running out in the fourth quarter, Woonsocket scored its third touchdown and converted the two-point try to knot the score at 21-21.
Barrington turned the ball over deep in its own end of the field with less than a minute to go in regulation, but Woonsocket was unable to punch in the go-ahead score.
In the overtime period, Barrington appeared to score, but the touchdown was called back on a penalty. With its possession, Woonsocket found the end zone and escaped with the 27-21 victory.
Barrington will try to rebound from the loss when it hosts Rogers High School on Friday night at Victory Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
