Drizzly softball game called with Portsmouth up, 8-3

Team awaits league ruling

PORTSMOUTH — Members of the Portsmouth High varsity softball team had an 8-3 lead as they came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning against Johnston Monday afternoon.

Unfortunately, that was when umpires decided to call the game due to the light but steady rainfall that dampened the contest at PHS.

On Wednesday, PHS coach Mario Occhi said there has been some confusion as to whether the game is official or suspended until the final inning is finished. “We are still waiting to hear back from the league,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Patriots came from behind to overtake Ponaganset on the road, 5-3. The win improved their record to 7-6 in Division II and 8-6 overall.

The team is scheduled to play Juanita Sanchez at Roger Williams Park today (May 24), at 4 p.m.

The Patriots will host Middletown at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, at Portsmouth Middle School.
