Dr. Leslie T. Malmgren Jr., Tiverton

Dr. Leslie T. Malmgren Jr. of Tiverton, formerly of Skaneateles, New York, passed away on Thursday Feb. 20, 2014, at his residence after 13 years battling, researching, and participating in the newest clinical trials for prostate cancer.  He was the husband of 42 years to Kathleen (Quirk) Malmgren. They had just celebrated their anniversary last Wednesday. 

Leslie was born in Brockton, Mass., the son of the late Leslie T. Malmgren Sr. and the late Abby (Denson) Malmgren. He graduated from Brockton High School, Class of 1964.

Dr. Malmgren continued his education by earning his bachelors degree in biology from Bridgewater State College and also his master's degree. Leslie then earned his PhD from Clark University in Worcester. Dr. Malmgren then did his post doctoral work at the University of Uppsala in Sweden.

His professional career as a professor of otolaryngology spanned 35 years at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY,  until he retired in 2009. Dr. Malmgren published articles and book chapters in several medical journals which advanced  the knowledge of the aging process of the larynx.

Leslie was an avid speed skater, cyclist, and cross country skier, who enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking and quiet time at Howland's beach in Westport Harbor.

Survivors besides his wife are his trusted black lab Buck; a sister, Linda Malmgren of West Swanzey, NH; several cousins and many sisters and brothers in law, nieces and nephews.

Memorial visitation for Leslie was held on Sunday from in the Hathaway Home for Funerals, 1813 Robeson Street, Fall River, followed by a memorial service on Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be privately held at the request of the family.
