Dr. Joseph Motta, 77, Bristol


Dr. Joseph Furtado Motta, 77, of Surf Drive, passed away on July 31 at home.

Born in Villa Franca do Campo, he was the son of the late John and Virginia (Furtado) Motta. He was the father of Michael Motta and Andrew Motta; companion of Penny Merris; former husband of Janice Carbone; and brother of Lillian Carreiro and the late Mary Santos, Mary Lucy Rafael and Angelina Motta.

Dr. Motta was a 1954 graduate of Colt Memorial High School. He then went on to graduate from Rhode Island College and received his Doctorate from Nova University. He joined the faculty of Bristol Community College as a Professor of Psychology and was the Dean of Student Affairs.

His funeral services were held Aug. 7 from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth Church.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
