Dr. John Champlin Lathrop, 89, formerly of Barrington

Dr. John Champlin Lathrop, 89, of Laurelmead died Monday, May 22, 2017 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Irene McKenzie Lathrop.

Born in Westerly, a son of the late Francis & Elizabeth (Champlin) Lathrop, Sr., Dr. Lathrop was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and the Albany Medical College. He was a Providence resident for 10 years, previously living in Barrington and East Greenwich.

He was in private practice for 40 years with offices in Providence, Barrington and South County before retiring.  He was a physician in the US Army at Camp Leroy Johnston in Louisiana.

He is survived by four daughters, Joan Elizabeth Lathrop of Seymour, Conn., Diane Lathrop of Middletown, Mary Lathrop Truslow of Loveland, Colo., and Catherine Lathrop Strahan of Sudbury, Mass. He leaves six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Francis Lathrop, Jr. of Westerly.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Laurelmead, 355 Blackstone Blvd, Providence to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
