Dorothy R. Almeida, 89, Tiverton

Dorothy R. (Countouriotis) Almeida, 89, of Tiverton, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Edward Almeida, prominent and world renowned flute maker. She was born in Fall River,  the daughter of the late John and Anna (Allaire) Countouriotis. She resided in Somerset, Mass., for many years and Chelmsford, Mass., for 25 years before moving to Tiverton in 1974. While residing in Chelmsford, Mrs. Almeida was a Realtor for many years and assisted her husband in producing some of the highest quality flutes that could be found in most prestigious symphony orchestras. Mrs. Almeida was a communicant of St. Christopher’s Church in Tiverton and a member of its Women’s Guild, she was also a former member of the Tiverton Garden Club. She is survived by three children, Garret B. Almeida and his wife Patricia of Stuart, Fla., Gina D. O’Connor and her husband Daniel of Dracut, Mass., and Gayle Almeida-Hage and her husband Richard of Millbrae, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Devitt of Tiverton, seven grandchildren, Corrine, Danielle, Nathaniel, Kate and Rachel Almeida and Daniel and Gia O’Connor; a cousin, Anita Metras; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Almeida was also the mother of the late Geoffrey E. Almeida and sister of the late Annette Athanas, Lorraine Patenaude and John Countouriotis. Her funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 9,  at 10 a.m. in St. Christopher’s Church, 1584 Main Road., Tiverton. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her honor may be made to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport & Bristol Counties, PO Box 690, Portsmouth, RI 02871. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986.
