Doris A. Martel, 92, Warren

Doris A. (Monast) Martel, 92, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013.  She was the wife of the late Romeo Martel and former wife of the late Frank Rutkiewicz.

Born in Warren, RI, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred and Lumina (Trombley) Monast. She was the owner and operator of Rusty’s Variety Store for 25 years before retiring in 1971. She was a member of East Warren All Stars Softball Team and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary.

She leaves her son, Robert F. Rutkiewicz and his wife Dorothy of Warren; a sister, Rita Bednartz; and her grandchildren, Robert F. Jr. and Rebecca Rutkiewicz, Tyler Williams and Catherine Martel. She was the mother of the late Sandra William; sister of the late Florence Botelho, Lillian Hellew, and William, Raymon, Emile and Ernest Monast; and grandmother of the late Justin Williams.

Her funeral service was held Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 from the Wilbur Romano Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Jean the Baptist Church. Burial followed in St. Jean the Baptist Cemetery. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
