Diocese to install Fr. Pontes as East Providence's St. Francis Xavier Pastor


EAST PROVIDENCE  — The Most Rev. Robert C. Evans, Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, will preside at the pastor Installation Mass of Rev. Scott J. Pontes on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 5 p.m.at St. Francis Xavier Church.

Father Pontes was born in Providence and educated in the publicschools in Bristol and Rhode Island College.  He began his seminary studies for pre-theology at the Seminary of Our Lady of Providence and Providence College, and completed the studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary in New Jersey where he received a Master’s Degree in Theology.

He was ordained by Bishop Robert E. Mulvee in 2004 in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Providence and was then assigned to serve as assistant pastor of St. Francis Xavier.  In 2008, Fr. Pontes was appointed assistant pastor of St. Matthew in Cranston and in 2009 he was assigned to St. Elizabeth in Bristol.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
