Dimond Vaz, 96, Tiverton

Dimond "Gramps" Vaz, 96, of Tiverton, died on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013.  He was the widower of Flora Mae (Helger) Vaz.  Born in Dighton, Mass., he was the son of the late Frances (Silva) and Emmanuel Vaz.
He had formerly worked as mechanic at Ray's Auto Garage and was the former owner of Flo's Drive In of Portsmouth.  He had served in the US Army.
He is survived by his daughters, Mildred Folger and Cynthia Mello.  He also leaves  five grandchildren and five  great grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Arimued, Arthur, Alfred and Anthony Vaz.
Visitation is Tuesday, Jan. 15,  from 7-9 p.m..  His funeral will be held Wednesday
at the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, 462 Main Road, Tiverton, at 9:30 a.m.  Graveside Ssrvices at Pocasset Hill Cemetery. www.almeida-pocasset.com

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
