Deborah Lynn Sanford, 55, of Portsmouth, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 16, 2017. Deb grew up by the Sakonnet River in Tiverton, and was raised by her mother Judith (Grinnell) and the late Melvin “Butch” Sanford. She was the second born, sandwiched between her older brother Steve and younger brother Bill.

Deborah was also a fun loving aunt of Gregory, Benjamin, Chantrea, Michelle, and Sokeara Sanford. Although her nieces and nephews usually referred to her as simply Deborah or Deborah O’ Great One, their kinship was known by many.

Deborah will be remembered as a hardworking, independent, social butterfly. She was a self-employed court reporter under All State Insurance Company for 25 years. As a physically active woman, Deborah maintained her stunning appearance. She regularly swam at the “Y” and attended Zumba classes (where she sported original 1980’s jazzercise outfits). Deb was an active member of the Newport Ski Club and an avid drag race fan. She enjoyed a seven-mile walk every morning where she would pick up her neighbors’ newspapers from their driveway and drop them at their door. Deborah couldn’t say no to going out for food or drinks, where she would spend hours laughing and chatting with her wide array of friends from all over. No matter where Deborah went, whether it be the race track with family or out for a drink with friends, her smile and beautiful soul was never left behind.

Deborah’s friends and family are welcome to join us for a memorial celebration of her life on Saturday, Oct. 28, at The Atlantic Resort, 240 Aquidneck Ave., Middletown, from 12 to 3 p.m. Those in attendance are encouraged to bring their favorite photo of Deborah. In lieu of flowers or donations, make a gesture of loving kindness to someone, be they familiar or a stranger.

Rest in peace, Deborah Dearest.
