Community emergency response course planned

Westport Emergency Management will be holding a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program in May. The training helps citizens to be better prepared in the event of a natural or man-made event. More information on CERT training can be found at www.fema.gov This training will be held at the Westport Fire Department, Station 1, located at 54 HixBridge Road. Training dates will be on the following; Thursdays from 7-9 p.m., May 2, 9, 16, and 23, as well as Saturdays the 4th and the 11th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge for this training but class size is limited. Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
