EAST PROVIDENCE — The domestic violence charges against an East Providence School District teacher and long-time coach have been dropped, East Providence Police confirmed.

Michael Solitro, a city resident, an instructor at Riverside Middle School and for the last decade the head girls’ basketball coach at East Providence High School, was arrested by East Providence Police in the early morning hours of March 5 on charges of domestic violence. Mr. Solitro, 36 was taken into custody from his home on Leahy Street the night of the incident, booked and later released.

On Friday, April 21, East Providence Police Detective Lieutenant Ray Blinn responded to an inquiry on the status of the case. Lt. Blinn said the charges against Mr. Solitro have been “dismissed at the request of the victim.”

At the time of his arrest, Mr. Solitro was immediately placed on administrative leave from his positions within the school district. He was replaced on the girls’ basketball bench by assistant Zachary Roche, who coached the Townies for two games in Open State Tournament playoffs following the alleged incident.

Mr. Solitro’s professional standing remains in flux. Superintendent Crowley declined to comment on the situation because of it being a classified personnel matter.
