Cars, cars and more cars at Portsmouth Abbey

PORTSMOUTH — It was a car lover’s dream today at Portsmouth Abbey School.

Hundreds turned out for the 58th annual Newport Motor Car Festival hosted by the Portsmouth Rotary Club. The oldest classic car show on the East Coast is an annual Father’s Day tradition.

Visitors were treated to fine views of Narragansett Bay as they inspected automobiles and motorcycles of all makes and models, some of which dated back more than 100 years.

The Rotary raises about $8,000 to $10,000 annually at the car show for its 25 or so charities in Newport County. The Rotary also awards scholarships of $1,000 each to two Portsmouth High School seniors every year.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
