Bristol's Defiance company welcomes new Engine 3

Posted

The Bristol Fire Department’s Defiance Fire Station has a brand new piece of fire apparatus, and it’s a sight to behold.

Recently, the station welcomed aboard its new Engine 3, a 2018 Smeal Fire Apparatus Engine with a Spartan Metro Star cab and chassis. The Engine is a 450-hp Cummins L-9 diesel engine with an Allison 3000 EVS transmission. It’s total length is 31 feet, 4 inches; total width is 8 feet, 6 inches; and it holds 1,000 gallons of water. The pump is a Waterous CMUC20 two-stage pump with a maximum output of 1,500 gallons per minute.

At the dedication ceremonies held at the Defiance Station, Fire Chief Michael DeMello said the new Engine 3 replaces the old version, which has been in service since 1993.

“The new Engine 3 was built by the Smeal Fire Apparatus Co. of Snyder, Neb.,” said the chief. “It took over a year to build. It should be in service in two or three weeks.”

Master of ceremonies at the dedication was Company Clerk Bill Van Voast. Also present were Battalion Chief Jim Vieira, Capt. Adam Cabral, Dep. Chief Rob Ferguson, Lt. Jim Morris, Lt. Nelson Luis, and 1st Driver Louis Medeiros. The Rev. Stephen M. Battey, assistant pastor at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, blessed the new truck.

“The residents of Bristol recognize that we have a vested interest in protecting our town,” said Town Administrator Steve Contente. “A fire station and engine assigned to a resident’s district connects him or her with their community. This engine brings members of all ages and differences together to man it with a common mission, to protect their homes and the homes and businesses of their friends and neighbors.  In turn, the community is interested and supportive of their local fire station and equipment.  This mission has not changed since the inception of the Bristol Fire Department fire companies. What this engine is, is a sign that a community is healthy and strong and interconnected. The dedication of this engine is a distinction of a strong community and a source of pride.”
