Bristol Rotary and fire department hosting food drive
The Bristol Rotary Club and the Bristol Fire Department will team up on Sunday, Jan. 27 along with volunteers, going door to door to collect non-perishable food donations to the Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen.
Volunteers will deliver plastic bags to Bristol residents on Jan. 20; residents are asked to leave non-perishable food in these bags, at their front door on Jan. 27 for pick-up.
Bristol Fire Chief Bob Martin will direct the collection side of the food drive.
“Because of time constraints, we really are only able to cover about 50 percent of the town in one afternoon, so we want people to know what neighborhoods we will be canvassing and which ones we won’t,” he said.
“Essentially, the Hopeworth neighborhood and everything north to the Warren town line, Chestnut Street and the Fales Road neighborhood to the Warren Line will also be canvassed for donations, excluding North Farm.
“Time permitting and based on the number of volunteers, we could venture farther south, but that will be a game day decision.”
Mr. Martin said he expects volunteers to bring in thousands of pounds of food during the event.
“With the equipment and the volunteers we expect to have, that is a lot of work in just four hours, to solicit, collect, box up and deliver an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 pounds of non-perishable food to the Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen.”
Cidalia Rodrigues, Bristol Rotary past president, added, “Providing a bag prior to pick-up day makes it easier for residents to donate food, this also makes the process safer and faster for volunteers.”
Ms. Rodrigues said people can also drop off food donations at the BankNewport on the corner of Hope and Gooding from noon to 3 p.m. on Jan. 27.
Organizers are also looking for volunteers to help with the food drive. Anyone interested can stop by the BankNewport at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 27. Volunteers will reportedly be treated to a macaroni and meatball dinner at the Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen on Hope Street at 4 p.m.
