Boat safely towed to Portsmouth after taking on water

Three men aboard 19-foot boat were uninjured

PORTSMOUTH — A 19-foot powerboat that started taking on water in East Passage late Monday morning was safely towed to Carnegie Abbey Marina by Portsmouth firefighters.

The three men aboard the boat, which had launched from Bristol, were not injured.

“The call went into Bristol Police and it was a report of a vessel taking on water, north of the Mt. Hope Bridge,” said Portsmouth Deputy Fire Chief Michael O’Brien.

Shortly afterwards, the boat’s location was reported as “a mile south of the windmill,” referring to the wind turbine at Portsmouth High School, he said.

“Our Marine 2 went out here (Carnegie Abbey Marina) and took a hard left and ran into them. Everybody else was searching up at the (Mt. Hope) Bridge,” the deputy chief said.

A tow line was secured immediately, he said.

Things got a little hairy near the mouth of the marina, however, as the fire boat battled a strong southward wind and choppy waters as it steered clear of nearby rocks.

“To be honest, our vessel is awful in the wind,” said Deputy O’Brien. “It sits up high in the water and gets blown around very easily and we don’t have twin motors, so it’s difficult to control.”

Rescue workers managed to tie up to a dock safely, however, and escorted the three men off their boat.

The boat's owner is Somphone Somoulaylack, of Woonsocket.
