Run, jog, or walk past rolling fields and beaches on Saturday, June 16 at Norman Bird Sanctuary’s 12 annual 5K Run/Walk in memory of David Leys Jr.

More than 400 runners start at the Norman Bird Sanctuary Welcome Center, travel past Hanging Rock, Second Beach and Sachuest Point before finishing by the Third Beach dunes in front of cheering spectators. Kids can join the fun with the Frosty Freez Kids Run, a quarter-mile dash past fields filled with bird houses. A USA Track & Field sanctioned race, the 5K also allows competitive runners to qualify for future races.

The proceeds from this event, in memory of David Leys Jr., a native islander and great friend of NBS, directly support the mission to preserve 325 acres of wildlife habitat and provide educational opportunities for learners of all ages.

WHEN: Saturday, June 16; race starts at 8:30 a.m.; Frosty Freez Kids Run at 8:15 a.m.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
