Girls basketball team improves to 8-2

Olivia Middleton scored 20 points and Andrea Kubas-Meyer dropped in 18, pacing the Barrington High School girls basketball team to a 59-33 win over Bay View on Monday night. 

The Eagles pulled out to a 31-22 first half lead and extended the margin with a strong second half. Liddy Hutchings finished the game with six points, while Alex Marinelli and Cary Heterick each scored four. 

Barrington crushed Cumberland 61-24 on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Barrington built a 34-12 halftime lead and cruised to the victory.

Nine Barrington players finished in the scoring column, led by Alex Marinelli's 14 points. Andrea Kubas-Meyer and Olivia Middleton each scored 10 points, while Cary Heterick finished with nine and Elizabeth McConaghy scored eight.

Barrington's record stands at 8-2 in the division and 11-2 overall.

Boys basketball

Barrington fell to 5-4 in the division after losing to Chariho, 61-54, on Monday night. 

Deven Connors scored a game-high 22 points to lead Barrington, while Ben Silvia added nine and Ryan Bonneau finished with seven. Brendan Conaty scored six in the loss. 

On Friday, Jan. 19, Barrington defeated Pilgrim 68-49. The Eagles opened a 14-point halftime en route to the victory.

William Rywolt scored 18 points to lead Barrington, while Mike Coogan added 15 and Connors had 13. Silvia scored 11.

On Tuesday, Jan. 16, Barrington defeated West Warwick, 59-41. Coogan knocked down three three-pointers and finished with 16, while Rywolt dropped in 12 and Silvia tallied nine. Bonneau hit 6-out-of-7 free throws and finished the game with eight points.

Boys hockey

Barrington picked up a pair of victories last weekend.

In Friday night's game, Barrington defeated Coventry 5-3, led by a four-goal performance from Josh Roy. 

In the first period, Roy scored two goals. The first was assisted by Jacob Andreozzi, while the second was unassisted. Coventry also scored in the first period. In the second, Roy scored again assisted by Luke Rudman and Matt Bates. In the third period, both teams scored two goals. Roy scored his fourth goal of the night assisted by Rudman. Dominic Robidoux scored an empty netter to end the game. Goalie Stephan Amaral made 18 saves.

On Saturday, Barrington faced East Greenwich and won 7-1.  

In the first period, EG scored one goal while the Eagles scored two. Matt Spears scored Barrington's first goal, assisted by Owen Gordon and Jacob Andreozzi. Andreozzi then scored with assists coming from Owen Crain and Drew Sirmalis. 

In the second period, Barrington scored two more goals. Matt Bates scored off an assist from Dominic Robidoux and Josh Roy. Roy scored later in the period with an assist from Bates. In the third period, the Eagles scored three more goals. Roy scored two of the goals with assists from Crain, Callum Flaherty, and Robidoux. The final goal was scored by Bo Vanier assisted by Brendan Ridlon, and Flaherty. Freshman goalie Matthew Hosey made 19 saves. 

Track

Barrington High School student-athletes competed in the 36th annual Yale Interscholastic Track Classic on Friday. In the boys weight throw, Barrington's Jack Dunn finished 12th. In the girls weight throw, Barrington's Annika Kelly finished second. Sydney Polando was 10th and her sister, Faith, finished in 12th.  

At the New Balance Games in New York on Saturday, Faith Polando finished third in the girls weight throw while Sydney was 10th.  

Swimming

The Barrington High School boys swim team blanked Cranston East 72-0 in a dual meet on Monday. Cris Silveira  won the 50 free, Jackson Bennett won the 100 free and Alston Stone captured first place in the 100 backstroke. Soren Renard won the 100 breaststroke and the 200 free, while Luke Gorham won the 100 butterfly. Barrington teams won all three relay events.

The Barrington girls team also defeated Cranston East, 52-42. Cali Diehl won the 100 backstroke and Liz Duvel won the 100 butterfly. Kaley Swintak finished first in the 200 IM and Lindsay Turgeon won the 500 free. The team of Emily Hadad, Diehl, Claire Pomfret and Brooke Galbraith won the 200 free relay, while Lisa Zulker, Natasha Epps, Hadad and Megan Mujezmott won the 200 medley relay.
