Bernard Vincent Scola, of Barrington

Posted

Bernard Vincent Scola died peacefully at the Phillip Hulitar Hospice Center on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, after a long illness. He was the husband of Jane (Arcaro) Scola to whom he had been married for 45 years. The Scolas have been long time residents of Barrington. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Vincent Scola and Elisa (Chiaverini) Scola. A retired jewelry manufacturer, Bernard worked in the family jewelry business, Vargas Manufacturing Company and served as vice-president and sales manager. Subsequently he held the position of president of Scola Enterprises, a costume ring manufacturing company which he founded with his father and sister, Diane Scola. He retired in 1998.

Bernard enjoyed participating in many family activities and was particularly interested in family genealogy. In partnership with a cousin, he researched the Scola family history and produced a lengthy family tree with annotated references. He was also fascinated by the decorative arts and design especially in jewelry design, homes, gardens and architecture. His homes in Barrington as well as his ownership of the historic boathouse on the Barrington River proudly reflected this passion.

Historic preservation was another area that interested Bernard. For many years he was a volunteer at The Providence Preservation Society and served as co-chair of several successful house tours of historic homes and sites in the Providence area. He was honored by the society for his volunteer work. As a member of the Barrington Preservation Society he became an officer of the board and served as treasurer and president. Both Bernard and his wife were honored for the restoration and preservation of their former historic boathouse and for all their work for the society.

Besides his wife he leaves his son, James Albert Scola and his wife Jessica Blake and his granddaughter Addison Jane of Seattle, Wash. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Francis Hugh Scola and his wife Dr. Patricia Sexton Scola, his sister, Diane Eileen Scola and many nieces and nephews.

Bernard’s funeral and burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to The Scola Family Fund at Brown University, Office of Planned Giving, Box 1893, Providence, RI 02912. Arrangements by the Perry-McStay Funeral Home.
