Benjamin Barandas, 79, Westport

Benjamin Barandas, 79, of Westport, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving and devoted family.  He was the husband of Delores (Cabeceiras) Barandas. Ben was a Korean War veteran in the U.S. Army.  Prior to his retirement in 1995, he was employed by Globe Manufacturing for 35 years. Born in Fall River, Ben was the son of the late Joaquim and Mary Barandas and brother of the late Laura Martin.  He was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church, Westport and a member of the Knights of Columbus #4753 Fr. Boehr Council in Tiverton, the Over the Hill Gang Ben loved spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandsons.  He enjoyed helping others with computers and anything electronic.  He loved to travel with My Coach and Joan’s Travel Group, going on cruises and many vacations with his wife and dearest friends.  He enjoyed ballroom dancing, square dancing and was a member of the Four Hands Round Square Dance Club.  He also enjoyed working bingo at the Knights and was an avid book reader. Besides his wife of 56 years, Ben is survived by his daughters, Donna Carvalho and her husband Joey of New Bedford, and Laurie Drabble and her husband Charlie of Westport; three grandsons, Westley and Elliot Drabble and Ryan Carvalho; and several nieces and nephews including Patricia Jackson and Edward Martin Jr. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Rosalie Welchman for her devotion and help throughout this difficult time. Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
