Bayside YMCA director also leading Newman YMCA

Joe Martino, executive director at the Bayside YMCA will become district executive of both the Bayside YMCA in Barrington and the Newman YMCA in Seekonk, Mass. They are both branches of the YMCA of Greater Providence.

Mr. Martino has been with the YMCA of Greater Providence for 16 years. Most recently, he was instrumental in the expansion and upgrade of the Bayside YMCA which added a new state-of-the-art swimming pool, locker rooms, welcome center and meeting space, all completed last summer.

Jim Berson, president and chief executive officer of the YMCA of Greater Providence, said Mr. Martino will engage Newman and Bayside in continuing to support and strengthen their respective boards, increase philanthropic dollars, and deepen the Y’s impact in these communities.

Mr Martino is thrilled to be taking on a new career advancement and with his team of professionals hopes to continue the mission of the YMCA to bring quality health care programming to the area.

“I am really excited to take leadership of two very strong branches that are doing great work for the communities we serve,” he said.

Prior to coming to Barrington, Mr. Martino served with the YMCA of Greater Boston as the associate executive/interim executive at the Waltham Branch. He began his 30-year Y career with the Greenfield YMCA in Western Massachusetts, followed by the West Suburban Y and the Greater Lowell Y, both in Massachusetts. He began his YMCA career in fitness/wellness, and was one of the developers of the Y’s Way to Strength Training Certification.

Mr. Martino has been a regular presenter at the club industry shows in Chicago and New York; and his articles appear in many newspapers and magazines including the Y publication, Perspective. His daily radio show “Fitness Facts and Fallacies” was heard throughout Western New England.

He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Mr. Martino will begin his new role as district executive in early 2014.
