Barrington's squash team celebrates successful season

The Barrington squash club recently completed a successful season, notching four wins to just one loss.

Barrington, coached by Michael Riley, celebrated wins over Portsmouth Abbey, Moses Brown and St. Georges. This is the fourth year the team has included student-athletes from Barrington High School.

“The numbers have slowly crept up to the 28 kids who tried it out this season, 24 of whom stayed with it,” Mr. Riley wrote in an email. “I tried to get them on court as often as we could and get them several matches against other schools, which turned out to be quite successful considering how much court time our kids got.”

Mr. Riley said court time was hard to come by, but students compensated by working hard during practice. He added that there was a very good amount of talent on this year’s team.

“There is a group of very athletic kids, some of whom could become great squash players with serious dedication,” he wrote.

Mr. Riley would know. The squash professional at Rhode Island Country Club for more than two decades has been playing, coaching and refereeing squash for 40 years. He has been one of the higher ranked players in the US in his age group for 25 years.

The Barrington Squash Club is supported by the Rhode Island Country Club membership and the parents of the team members. Barrington High School provided transportation to the various away matches.

As a club sport, matches are considered “practice” matches or scrimmages for opponents who are U.S. Squash Association registered/affiliated. The goal for the Barrington club is to eventually become US Squash Association affiliated with varsity and junior varsity level teams.
