Barrington, Warren and Seekonk respond to Burr Ave. blaze
Barrington firefighters battled a house fire in the rain at 30 Burr Ave. on Tuesday night, Nov. 26.
According to Barrington Fire Chief Gerald Bessette, East Providence and Seekonk firefighters also responded to the blaze which started at approximately 8 p.m. Warren firefighters helped cover the Barrington fire station during the incident.
A line of fire apparatus and hoses bottled up the narrow road to fight the fire at the very end of the street. Police also had the road blocked off. Neighbors walked the street to catch a glimpse of the action as firefighters knocked down the flames.
Chief Bessette said the State Fire Marshal is investigating the blaze, which appeared to start outside the home. He said the fire traveled up an exterior wall to an attic vent, then it traveled inside the structure. The fire eventually spread to a bedroom inside the two-story home.
The homeowner tried to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose, said Chief Bessette, but was unable to knock it down. The chief added that attic fires (and basement fires) are especially difficult to battle.
The homeowner called 911 at about 8:20 p.m., and fire crews had the blaze under control by 9 p.m., but remained on scene until nearly midnight. The State Fire Marshal started an investigation on Tuesday night and was expected to continue this morning.
Chief Bessette said the homeowners — a couple — had to leave the home. He said no one was injured.
"We had to turn off the power to the home," he said.
At about 8:10 a.m. on Wednesday morning, a Barrington police officer was posted outside the home. Chief Bessette said the home will be monitored closely until the investigation is completed.
This was the second fire in four days on Burr Avenue. On Friday, Nov. 22, a Burr Avenue resident's car caught fire while it was idling in the driveway. Chief Bessette called the two fires a "coincidence" but added that any time there are multiple fires on a single street concerns are raised.
The chief said the fires were at two different homes on Burr.
