Barrington students prepare for robotics tournament

Posted

Four teams of Barrington youngsters will compete in the annual FIRST LEGO League RI Robotics tournament on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Roger Williams University.

The teams are:

• Overflow, Barrington Middle School, coached by Lisa McGartoll

• Tech-No-Logic, Barrington Middle School, coached by Laurie Dubel

• Flaming Ninja Cheezits, Barrington neighborhood team, coach by Sarah Cussler

• The Woofers, Barrington neighborhood team, coached by Wendy Bennet

The tournament marks the culmination of months of scientific research and problem solving among dozens of student teams, ages nine to 14.

Teams collaborated to build a LEGO-based robot and complete a research project related to this year’s theme, “Nature’s Fury.” The robots will compete head to head in The Robot Game, a series of obstacles on a game field made of LEGO elements, and present the innovative solutions they’ve created to help address the challenges of preparing for and rebuilding after a natural disaster.

Roger Williams University awards each member of the winning team a four-year scholarship of $5,000 per year, a $20,000 scholarship in total.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
