More than a half-dozen student-athletes from Barrington High School competed in the recent New Balance Indoor National track meet at The Armory in New York City.
Annika Kelly, a junior at Barrington High School, finished sixth in the weight throw event. Kelly saved her best throw of the day for her last attempt, hurling the weight 16.32 meters or 53 feet, 6.5 inches. The top distance in the event was 59 feet, 6 inches, by Georgia's Javon Joyner. Annika's BHS teammate Sydney Polando finished 19th in the weight throw with a distance of 46 feet, .75 inches.
The Eagles also had four girls compete in two separate relay events at nationals. Tess Gagliano, Caroline Livingston, Kate Zitzmann and Lily Sefranek competed in the distance medley relay and the 4x1 mile relay races.
In the distance medley relay, Sefranek ran the 1,200-meter leg, Gagliano ran the 400, Livingston ran the 800 and Zitzmann ran the anchor leg 1,600. Competing against 24 other talented teams, the Barrington girls finished 16th and crushed the Barrington High School record in the event by 3 seconds. The record dated back to 2013.
In the 4x1 mile relay, the same girls ran to a 12th place finish.
"I believe this is the first time BHS has qualified for two national indoor relays, which have very high standards," wrote BHS assistant coach Jon Barnes in a recent email.
After running the second leg in the 4x1 mile relay, Gagliano competed in the freshman 400.
In the boys weight throw event, Barrington High School senior Jack Dunn finished 29th with a throw of 58 feet, 6.5 inches.
USATF Championship
A few Barrington High School student-athletes also competed at the 2018 Hershey USATF Youth Indoor Championship in Staten Island, NY recently.
Sydney Polando and Faith Polando finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively, in the girls 17-18 weight throw event. Sydney's top throw measured 46 feet, .5 inches, while Faith's top throw was 45 feet, 7 inches.
In the boys 17-18 weight throw event, Barrington's Dunn finished 14th with a top throw of 59 feet, .25 inches.
