Barrington public school administrators sent out an e-mail to parents on Tuesday alerting them to a possible change in bus schedules due to the upcoming White Church Bridge replacement project.
The e-mail, which was shared with Sowams School parents, states that school officials met with First Student bus transportation representatives recently and planned to meet again today (Tuesday, Sept. 24) to discuss "potential changes to the existing routes and load counts during P.M. runs."
"First Student will be in contact with DOT to verify weight / size limits during construction and any other issues that may impact the bus schedule. Administration has a follow-up meeting on Tuesday with representatives from First Student, the police department and special education transportation coordinator."
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation issued a press release on Monday alerting people to the Sept. 30 start date for bridge work.
The DOT shared the following schedule regarding bridge work next week:
• Monday, Sept. 30: Alternating traffic pattern for the installation of temporary wheel chairs ramps and crosswalk on Massasoit Avenue, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Tuesday-Wednesday: A full bridge closure for the installation of a temporary median barrier, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.
• Tuesday-Friday: Westbound traffic on Massasoit Avenue from Martin Avenue to County Road will face a detour due to re-striping the roadway, bolting down the temporary median barrier to the bridge deck, and installing temporary fencing , 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The detour will use New Meadow Road and County Road. Eastbound traffic will not be affected.
Cardi Corp. won the job for the full bridge replacement with a $15.4 million bid. The work is not scheduled to be completed until May 2017.
