Barrington school officials concerned about bridge work

Barrington School Department officials are anxious to see how construction along the White Church Bridge, which starts on Monday morning, will impact student busing.

Superintendent Michael Messore and Finance Director Ron Tarro said they have been discussing the situation with the bus company, First Student, and are asking people to leave a little earlier than normal next week.

They said Monday — a professional development day for teachers — will be a test of sorts. Students in Barrington have the day off, but faculty and staff will report to the school. Mr. Messore said Monday could act as a preview of what is to come, although issues will likely get more complicated when buses enter into the mix.

Officials are also worried that construction could impact the weight limit on the bridge. There is currently a 15-ton weight limit on the span; school buses can pass, but the fire department's ladder truck cannot cross the span. DOT officials have not specified whether construction will result in a reduced weight limit.

Some traffic detours are already planned: The bridge will be reduced to a single lane of traffic — eastbound only — and will be closed to traffic from 8 p.m. on Oct. 1 to 6 a.m. on Oct. 2.

Cardi Corp. won the job with a $15.4 million bid. The work is scheduled to be completed in 2017.
