Barrington School Committee member resigns

Gina Pine says she is too busy to continue her work on the board

Barrington School Committee member Gina Pine announced her resignation during Thursday night's meeting.

Ms. Pine, an Independent, told fellow members of the committee that she enjoyed her time serving the public board but would be stepping down this fall.

"Thanks to everyone who voted for me, but unfortunately at this time, due to professional and personal commitments, I do need to resign," Ms. Pine said. "It's gotten much busier."

Barrington Schools Superintendent Michael Messore thanked Ms. Pine for her work on the committee and for agreeing to stay on the board until the December swearing-in of new school committee members following the November election.

He added: "You always ask me good questions and get right to the point."

Ms. Pine was elected to the Barrington School Committee in Nov. 2016. A total of four candidates — including Ms. Pine — ran for three open school committee seats. Democrats Anna Clancy and Dr. Megan Douglas finished first and second in votes, respectively, followed by Ms. Pine in third place.

Ms. Pine's recent decision to resign has created a wrinkle in the upcoming school committee elections. There will now be three seats open — two are for four-year terms, while the third, Ms. Pine's seat, will be for a two-year term.

Town officials discussed the situation and at Thursday night's school committee meeting, chairwoman Kate Brody announced that the top two vote-getters at the Nov. 2018 election will be given four-year terms, while the third place finisher will fill the unexpired two-year term.

Ms. Brody later added: "We respect your decision and we are grateful for your service and pleased you will stay through November."
