Barrington Pumpkin King holds court in Hampden Meadows
Michael Gold, who is known as the Pumpkin King on Halloween, sat on his driveway throne and welcomed hungry trick-or-treaters on Wednesday night in Barrington.
The 91-year-old resident, who is a retired physician and POW, had a few rules the kids had to follow in order to collect some Halloween candy. Actually, he had just one rule: all trick-or-treaters needed to bow before the king if they wanted candy. If they didn't, he would remind them. The message was repeated on a small orange sign posted on the garage behind the king.
Mr. Gold, who lives in the Hampden Meadows area of town, would have stolen the show in most neighborhoods, but had to compete with neighbors across the street who passed out full-size candy bars to youngsters.
