Barrington plays catch-up after snowfall

Public schools start an hour late on Friday morning

Posted

Barrington Town Manager Jim Cunha was a bit surprised to see snow still covering the ground when he woke up early Friday morning.

Forecasters had called for 1 to 3 inches of snow during the early evening hours on Thursday, and a transition to rain by midnight. Mr. Cunha, like many other people in the area, were expecting most of the snow to be melted by Friday morning. But instead, roads and lawns were still covered by a few inches of wet, heavy snow.

"It was kind of a perfect storm," said Mr. Cunha. "We were behind schedule. We're on top of it now."

The town called in the department of public works employees at about 5 a.m. to plow local roads, said Mr. Cunha, and the superintendent of schools, Michael Messore, issued a one-hour delay to the start of all Barrington schools.

"We got a late start plowing," added Mr. Cunha. "I think a lot of communities were probably caught off guard."

By 8 a.m. on Friday, the parking lots at the local schools were plowed and DPW trucks were busy clearing side-streets across Barrington. Mr. Cunha said the DPW faced a few additional challenges with Thursday night's storm — he said some of the trucks have not yet been rigged with snow plows because the department is still handling autumn work tasks.

"It's still the fall season," he said. "This is an early storm."

The town manager said the DPW did sand many local roads on Thursday.
