Barrington moves on to volleyball semifinals
It wasn’t an easy win for the Barrington High School girls’ volleyball team, but after beating Cranston West in Tuesday’s quarterfinal match, the Lady Eagles will now face Exeter/West Greenwich on Thursday, Nov. 7.
Although Barrington won the quarterfinal match 3 games to 1, the Falcons held the lead for part of game 4, threatening to push the series to a fifth game. But after Rebecca Sun took over service from Cranston West, the Eagles won all five serves to reclaim the lead and secure a 25-23 win.
Playing at net for most of the games, Sun, Francesa Bernardo and Megan Donnelly effectively prevented Cranston West from getting their kills shots over the net, and mixed up returns with hard spikes and easy loopers that consistently kept the Eagles ahead in points.
Keeping most of the starters in for the match, head coach Ron Enos relied on those at net, as well as Rachel Nassau, Rebecca Egge and Abigail Finan.
“We knew we’d be in for a tough match,” Mr. Enos said. “We have a lot of depth. Whenever we need to, we have players who can step right in.”
The winner of Thursday’s semifinal will face either Narragansett or East Greenwich in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 9 at URI’s Keaney Gym at 2 p.m.
