Barrington Middle School runners win state championship


The Barrington Middle School girls' cross country team won the state championship last week, finishing ahead of second place North Cumberland 53-73.

All seven of Barrington's varsity runners finished in the top 25 — Grace Connolly in fourth, Tea Bishop in fifth, Kate Zitzmann in eighth, Bella Ceseretti in 14th, Riley Kloc in 22nd, Bella Richardson in 24th, and KK Faulkner in 25th.

In the girls' middle school junior varsity race, Barrington's Simmi Auber finished third.

In the boys' middle school varsity race, Barrington finished third overall, paced by Dominic Portelli in eighth place and Kevin Gower in third. The Eagles finished just six points out of second place.

Barrington eighth-grader George Wicker won the boys' junior varsity race with a time of 11:47.6.

The races covered 1.9 miles at Goddard Park in Warwick. Thirty one teams competed.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
