Barrington High School students William Yao, Michael Chung, Michael Lamontagne, Eliot Laidlaw, Jonny Zhang, and Daniel Sheinberg teamed up to win this year's Rhode Island Math League State Championship recently.

Barrington High School headed to Science Olympiad nationals.

The victory marked Barrington's 16th in the last 19 years and seventh in the last eight years.

The top 14 schools in the state competed in eight rounds, including a relay round and a team round, covering topics including arithmetic, probability, statistics, algebra, trigonometry and geometry.

Barrington's A team of Yao, Chung, Lamontagne, Laidlaw, Zhang and Sheinberg scored better than any other team in the state, finishing with 118 points.

Wheeler had the second place team with 110 points and host Bishop Hendricken finished third with 99 points.

Prior to the state finals, Barrington was presented with trophies for winning the regular season title and for having five of the top eight individuals in the state. Jonny Zhang placed first, while Eliot Laidlaw was second, Michael Chung was third, Daniel Sheinberg was seventh and Michael Lamontagne was eighth.

Barrington High School math team coach Robert Marley also wanted to acknowledge the work of a number of other Barrington students: Andrew Sheinberg, Tripp Carolan, Wanqing Li, Andrew Cooke, Ben Bazyk, Connor McGartoll, Anika Kelly, Sam Wohlever, Callan Whitney, Sam Yuan, Matthew Bowman and Shiyuan Huang.

"Unfortunately these individuals were not eligible to compete at states due to a one team per school limit," said Mr. Marley. "During the regular season Barrington’s B team ranked third in the state and Barrington’s C team ranked sixth in the state."

There were 28 students on the Barrington High School math team this year.

Over the last 19 years, Barrington has compiled an impressive record of 292-13-3.

The math team will travel to Canton, Mass. on April 28 to compete against the best math teams in New England.
